We can already use this DNA to predict some traits, such as eye, skin and hair color. Soon it may be possible to accurately reconstruct your whole face from these traces. But can we ensure its privacy if we can predict the face of its owner? DNA phenotyping has been an active area of research by academics for several years now. Forensic biology researchers Manfred Kayser and Susan Walsh , among others, have pioneered several DNA phenotyping methods for forensics. In , they developed the IrisPlex system, which uses six DNA markers to determine whether someone has blue or brown eyes.

Using what they know about how DNA shapes the human face, an international team led by KU Leuven built an algorithm that scans through a database of images and selects the faces that could be linked to the DNA. As our physical appearance, including our face, is hardwired into our genetic material. Scientists have already identified multiple genes that determine the shape of our face — from the distance between our nostrils to the shape of our chin. Therefore, it is unlikely that we will ever be able to accurately predict a lifelike face from DNA alone. With the new tool hooked up to a large face database, investigators would get a range of possible reference faces instead of a single, limited sketch. Unfortunately, while we are learning about more and more genes that determine certain aspects of our face, this does not yet sufficiently translate to a better match between the predicted face and the faces in the database. Researchers also trying to develop a reverse approach that works better.
About DNA Facial Recognition
The INTERPOL Face Recognition System is an automated biometric software application capable of uniquely identifying or verifying a person by comparing and analysing patterns based on their facial features and contours. This is a relatively new biometric which is being introduced by police and other agencies around the world. As this is still in its infancy in most countries, standards and best practices are still in the process of being created, and INTERPOL is contributing to this. Our application became operational in November and made more than 60 potential matches in We therefore carry out a manual process — we call this Face Identification — to verify the results of the automated system.
This patented process allows experts to determine certain genetic traits inherited by an alleged family member. Electronic DNA Facial Point Connectivity uses a patented 16 Point Facial Connectivity system to assist in determining the genetic relationship of an alleged family member. Mothers Information is not needed but encouraged if available A staff expert will calculate your Facial Point Connectivity and the answers from your questionnaire and have same day answers for you. Information submitted after that time will be calculated and released the following day even on weekends Prior to pm Central time.
